      GBRMPA Eye on the Reef Program

      Our Eye on the Reef monitoring and assessment program enables anyone who visits the Great Barrier Reef to contribute to its long-term protection by collecting valuable information about reef health, marine animals and incidents that is used to understand the bigger picture and inform how we manage the Reef.

      Training achieved here qualifies people to attend in-water verification events and register for surveyor accounts in the Eye on the Reef system at https://eotr.gbrmpa.gov.au/ 

       
      GBRMPA Master Reef Guides Program 

      Master Reef Guides are striving to be the world’s leading reef guides and interpreters sharing the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

      Training includes the Reef Discovery Course, a free online training course summarising the A-Z of all things Great Barrier Reef and how best to share that knowledge with visitors.

      A copy of the course with easier Quizzes is available for self-enrollment by all reef tourism staff and the wider community.

      Q.P.W.S. Bird Monitoring

      The Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service monitors seabird populations in the Marine Park with this online training course available to participants.

      Q.P.W.S. Marine Animal Stranding

      Within Queensland’s Marine Parks and coastal waters, trained volunteers, community groups and Traditional Owners have partnered with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) to assist with responding to reports of dead, sick and injured marine turtles. This online training course will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to become a marine turtle stranding responder.

      Robin Aeillo (Contractor): Famous as the greatest interpreter of the natural world, Robin was pivotal in taking the tourism industry concept of site monitoring and forming it into the earliest origins of Eye on the Reef.

      Fiona Merida (GBRMPA): The driver, designer and custodian of everything to do with Eye on the Reef from the early formation, Fiona is the core engagement and scientific manager of the entire Program.
      Chris Jones (GBRMPA): Previously a reef tourism guide, Chris joined GBRMPA around 2012 using his science and interpretation skills to take on the role of managing Eye on the Reef engagement with the reef tourism industry and striving to evolve increasing rigor in the Tourism Weekly - Site Stewardship method.



      Daniel Schultz (GBRMPA): Previously a reef tourism guide, Dan joined GBRMPA around 2012 using his IT skills to help develop the first online training material for RHIS and in 2024 is the main trainer for the Crown-of-thorns starfish control program.

      Jen Dryden (GBRMPA): A key system designer of the original 2012 Eye on the Reef system and RHIS method, Jen was for several years also a key in-water training leader.
      Katrina Goudkamp (GBRMPA): Katrina was the Project Manager for the build of the original 2012 Eye on the Reef system and was instrumental in turning concepts into digital reality.
